A fun packed weekend at the Matlock Carnival with Single With Kids. Enjoy the popular Matlock Illuminations, a trip up a cable car and a Halloween Party finale on this fabulous Peak District value for money break!
The Peak District is a truly wonderful retreat to get away from it all with fantastic scenery and an abundance of activities, with a trip to the Carnival on Saturday evening (ending in the firework extravaganza) We’ve chosen a traditional, country hostel just outside of the beautiful village of Bakewell for this great value holiday. With so many places to explore this location is perfect for family adventures and an ideal break at half term.
The Matlock Carnival has been running since the days of Queen Victoria and is a popular event for families. There is a spectacular parade of illuminated boats along the riverside, a fairground in the park and a fabulous firework finale – a great October event.
For this fun Carnival weekend in the Peak District, we’ll be staying in the small town of Youlgreave, which lies near Bakewell, not far from Matlock. An ideal spot to unwind, but there’s also a host of great activities in the area too, including the Carnival itself.
The Peak District is a much over-looked treasure. With it’s central England location it’s relatively accessible and yet that holiday feeling soon hits you as soon as your route starts winding over hills and dale. There are a huge number of gentle walks nearby with lots of space for the kids to run wild and enjoy the fresh country air (and a few good spots for picnics too) but there are a good mix of family friendly attractions too.
Gulliver’s Kingdom is a great day out for those wanting rides and funfairs, and at value for money prices too. The Heights of Abraham can be reached by cable car and you can enjoy amazing views from the top before exploring the caves and adventure playground. Chatsworth House also offers fantastic days out with a good adventure playground as well as woodland walks. If you’re simply looking to enjoy the Peak District charm, Matlock, Bakewell and Ashbourne are worth a visit
This is a 3 night break during the October half term holiday, arriving on Saturday 20th October and leaving on Tuesday 23rd October.
Arrival is anytime after 4pm and depart late morning on the Tuesday.
This break coincides perfectly with the fantastic Matlock Bath Illuminations and we’ll also be sneaking in a little early Halloween party too!!
In the heart of the Peak District, just outside of the beautiful village of Bakewell, we are staying in picturesque Youlgreave. The postcode for Sat Navs is DE45 1UR.
Suitable for all ages but the minimum age for shared rooms is 4 years old. (There are only a very limited number of private rooms available)
We have exclusive use of this traditional country Youth Hostel which was once the village Co-Op and still retains many of its unique original features – the open plan living area was the the original shop area. Good value accommodation with a touch of history. This distinctive building provides a homely hostel base to explore the beautiful location and picnic tables outside to enjoy the countryside.
The hostel features one large dining/lounge area to chill out and a large, well-equipped self-catering kitchen. There is also a boot/drying room and a bike store and picnic tables outside to appreciate the idyllic surroundings.
With 42 beds spread over 9 rooms, we have a number of private rooms (ie for you and your kids) and shared rooms available. Shared rooms are traditional youth hostel style dorms and will be shared by between 2-4 families.
All rooms contain bunk beds. There are no en-suite rooms at this property, but plenty of individual toilets and showers close to bedrooms. The rooms will be shared with families with the same gender parent, a great way to break the ice and create a ‘sleep-over’ style feel for the children.
Access to hostel after 10pm is by door code. We will be able to access the hostel during the day.
This is a self catering trip and no meals are provided however a couple of communal meals will be arranged throughout the holiday – a ‘bring & share’ Halloween buffet on the Sunday evening and there is also a lot of opportunities for a pub lunch.
Further details will be provided closer to the event via email.
The cost includes self catering accommodation in private or shared rooms. The property is exclusive to Single With Kids and the break is accompanied by a Single With Kids’ coordinator who arranges events and get-togethers throughout the event.
*Please note that any additional entrance fees are not included*

Here are a few testimonials from previous trips :-)
" Lucia loved the holiday. Full of activities. Halloween party, educational trip to the Heights, exclusive property, no need to worry about safety issues. Nice host, Jo and Jake. Warm group. Lucia enjoys play with all the children and looks forward to the next holiday with the children. Being with other kids makes them learn from others. She didn’t follow me around at all. This trip is definitely a good experience. "
" What a weekend adventure we have had. It was welcoming, warm and beautiful. What all three of us needed after a challenging and difficult time. Mission accomplished, we got here and lots to tell people when we get home. I recommend SWK to people and children who understand. A great holiday. "
" Fantastic location. Well chosen day time activities to suit all ages. Laid back evening arrangements. We both had a fun but a relaxing break. Thanks to Jo and Jake for coordinating, well done. And thanks to a fab bunch of parents and kids who definitely made our holiday. See you all somewhere in the future no doubt. Weather was fantastic. Couldn’t have asked for more. "
" Had a fantastic time here at Youlgreave House in the Peak District. Laura was a great host ad was great at organising us trips out. See all you guys next time. "

" Lovely village and ideal accommodation. Scarlett made friends so quickly which made the trip so enjoyable. Activities were well organised and engaging for everyone. First SWK trip and have already rebooked for another. "
" Beautiful location. Lovely small and friendly village with approachable locals. Limited parking (this was resolved relatively easily though by driving up and down the village) and no cash point. Close shopping amenities. Excellent tourist attractions, all very close to hostel. 20 minute drive maximum to Chatsworth House, Bakewell and Heights of Abraham. If necessary people could probably drive longer to further attractions. Hostel: spacious, comfortable beds, good bedding. "
" Great time as newbies. Even though it was a YHA rooms clean and bunk beds comfortable. Well organised and Laura was great, sociable and very organised. Great spot and kids all had a great time. Thanks. "
" We all had a great trip with the SWK gang. Max was a fantastic host and a demon on the karaoke! Will definitely come again if this trip pops up again on the SWK calendar. "
" I like this holiday, everyone is nice, I made friends quickly. I felt very welcome and enjoyed the company. Thanks very much. "
" This is our fourth SWK trip, so I had high expectations and Max didn’t disappoint! He gave us a fantastic welcome and has been a brilliant coordinator, very relaxed but well organised. The location is good, with lovely scenery and plenty to do. We’ve really enjoyed this trip, met some lovely people and the girls have made many new friends – hope we meet them all again. Great holiday, thank you.
I liked this holiday because it was fun and we went on the hike. I enjoyed staying up late and making new friends.

" I liked this holiday very much because I met lots of new people and I also enjoyed the heights of Abraham.
" My now 7 year old and myself thoroughly enjoyed our SWK holiday. The location was great, the facilities very good, and the company was excellent. The children had a wonderful time together, so much so that there is already an aftertaste that the holiday would come to an end . We definitely would do it again and cant wait for our next SWK holiday in May. Thank you for Max, our coordinator, for putting together the schedule and putting his heart at giving people a good time. "
" Great short break. Lovely modern accommodation. Great activities. Lovely small group where everyone made friends easily. Joseph enjoyed having freedom away from me for a change. Thank you. "
" This was my first SWK with my 7 year old and didn’t really know what to expect but far exceeded my expectations, Kiera found a friend straight away the crowd of mums and dads all got on and all very relaxed. Max was a great coordinator and left it to us to decide what we wanted to do but in the end everyone joined in together. All in all a great time for both of us definitely will try another SWK.
I liked this holiday because I was never bored. I made lots of friends, my friends are all nice. At night we are always busy and that’s what I like. I had a great holiday.

" Absolutely fantastic. Expected a lot before hand and myself and kids all thought it was brilliant beyond initial expectations by miles. Max was fantastic with exceedingly good, not in your face, leadership skills and enabled a very very relaxed open environment for all. Both of the kids immediately found friends for life who I am sure they will meet again at future events. The whole SWK agenda is not a business as such but a guiding sharing religion of support and sharing of each others life experiences and is an excellent environment for anyone who wants to make a step change in their life. Again fantastic. "
" Was very dubious as first time. But really enjoyed. Son mixed in straight away, Max organised but not pushy. Went for a Derbyshire walk which was what I was hoping for. Accommodation good for YHA. All got on well together really enjoyed would definitely do again. "
" My daughter and I loved this break - the accommodation was better than I expected for the price and the group got on really well together. We really enjoyed the walk to the waterfall and for me it was great to spend time with other single parents "
" Absolutely stunning location really felt like we got away from it all, lovely walks planned by coordinator and we all helped out at meal times. Great sized group and cheap break away to recharge our batteries. Will definitely book again "
" Thank you for organising such a fun weekend and giving us loads of opportunities to bond as a group. It’s been great to see all the kids getting on and letting us mums relax and get to know each other. Lots of laughter and wine – just what we all needed! It has been such a great introduction to SWK and I’m sure we’ll do another holiday as soon as we can "
" Sally (the coordinator) was lovely. She did a great job at making me feel comfortable since it was my first trip. It was nice to get away and let my son just enjoy himself. We had a lovely time and I have already recommended it to my friends. Holiday can be lonely when it’s just you with your child, but this way you get to meet other people and your child can have company and fully enjoy themselves "
" A truly fabulous 'initiation' weekend into SWK! Alfie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to many more SWK holidays, and just hope this weekend is the beginning of many new and exciting journeys! "
" The people were all quite similar so we all got on well. The age range of the kids was good. The accomodation was lovely. It was better than expected. We had an absolute ball. Thanks very much indeed! "
