Weightloss Surgery on the NHS - Good , bad or indifferent?
« on: November 27, 2014, 07:55:02 AM »
Apparently up to 2 million people may soon be eligible for weightloss surgery on the NHS :

Is this a good thing?

Depends what you mean... that we have an increasingly overweight population? No.
That by taking action now we can lessen the long term effects of an increasingly overweight population health problems, both in terms of future medical costs and in terms of ancapaticty and other benefits that these health costs incur on the exchequer. Not to mention the benefits for the individuals involved.
Also, just because you are eligable doesn't mean you will actually do it... I mean, there are side effects.
Onwards and upwards.

The article I read implied the NHS could have the capacity to perform 15,000 operations per year ... might take a while to get through 2,000,000
