Proxy settings help
« on: November 09, 2010, 10:18:55 AM »
Hi,

For the last couple of days I've been trying to download an update to my computer protection software. The download has been very slow and in the end (after several hours)  the internet has cut out and the message last night was that I should check my proxy settings.

However, I have no idea what proxy settings are and how to check them, so would much appreciate a bit of guidance on this.

Thanks,

Helen

Hi Helen,

If you're on a standard home broadband connection, you won't be using a proxy server. It will be something else causing the problem. Can you try in the morning when there's generally less traffic from home connections?

(in case any pedants come along, yes I know it could be going through a transparent proxy, but this still means no proxy configuration is required)

I would reset your router, most home BB issues are sorted with a reboot.

Thanks Rich and Stuart for your replies - forgot to say that I use mobile broadband so I've got a modem for my laptop. Does that make any difference?

I did try to do the download yesterday morning - left the laptop on all day but found the message about proxy settings when I got home :-\

You will then need to see if your settings are correct, this is usually found under a web address like this: http://192.168.1.254

Rich might be able to help you out further as I am more a web guy than the other stuff.

Hope you get it sorted.

Well if it starts downloading at all, then it won't be the proxy settings. If they're not right, then it just won't work at all.

Any idea of the file size? Mobile broadband is generally not great for downloading large files, so it could just be that you're up against that :-\

If you know anyone with normal broadband, it may be simplest to pop round there and do the update

First of all, thanks once again, Stuart - will look into your suggestion if need be.

Funnily enough, Rich, my sister (who used to be a systems engineer) suggested that I pop round to someone's with normal broadband, too. The file does seem to start downloading so it looks as though it could well be the file size: approx 102000 Kb.

Yeah, 100mb is fairly big, it's probably just that.

Lo and behold, switched my laptop on earlier and my computer protection software started to update - and finished updating, all of it downloaded in less than 20 minutes ;D

Maybe there was something wrong with the atmospherics last weekend!

I'd change to some software that does incremental updates.
